Discover Pornic, the pearl of the Jade coast in Brittany Loire Ocean

You want to go camping in Loire-Atlantique, but you don't know yet which destination to choose? CAMPING PLUS BRETAGNE takes you to discover Pornic, a charming seaside resort on the Jade coast, but also a medieval and maritime city between Brittany and the Vendée, just an hour from Nantes!

The Old Port and its lively quays

As soon as the sun comes out, the port of Pornic is the perfect place to stroll from terrace to terrace, observe the comings and goings of pleasure boats and old rigging or simply enjoy the entertainment, the many shops and restaurants that never run out. The atmosphere is very different from the time when Pornic fishermen went to Newfoundland to hunt cod in the 17th century. This is evidenced by the beautiful residences built by the rich shipowners of yesteryear along the quays and streets around the Old Port.

The beaches of Pornic

Pornic has more than twenty beaches and small coves to sunbathe on the hot sand while children swim safely. Among many others, there is the Noëveillard Beach that Renoir immortalized in painting in his painting "Pornic Beach", the Boutinardière beach and its unusual rocks in the middle of the fisheries, the wild and secret beach of the Etang, or the Porteau beach, nestled between the rocky cliffs... In short, you have a lot of choice! If you prefer to combine seaside and hiking, the customs trail (GR34) is available to you. It stretches for 14 km along the pornographic coastline...enough to get a good breath of fresh air in front of the ocean!

Pornicious cultural heritage

Pornic is not only a seaside resort, it is also a medieval city with a rich cultural heritage. The imposing castle of Pornic, that of Gilles de Rais, alias Bluebeard, built from the 13th to 15th centuries on the heights of the city, bears witness to this. At the foot of the castle, you will notice a stele in memory of Alain Barbetorte, the first duke of Brittany, who drove the Vikings out of the Pays de Retz in the 10th century. Clinging to the cliffs, elegant villas look out over the ocean. They were built in the middle of the 19th century by the good fortunes of Nantes that Pornic has to offer as a privileged holiday destination. A little further on, in the former commune of Clion-sur-Mer, the Château des Brefs, built in the 12th century, is also worth a visit. It is an old property of the princes of Condé. Later, the writer Albert Camus stayed there to finalize his novel "The Plague".

Pornic is also about fisheries. These emblematic fishing huts on stilts that advance into the sea are the privileged witnesses of a very ancient tradition: fishing for plaice.
